The Artscape Theatre
Published: August 12, 2010 7:15 pmThe Artscape Theatre in Cape Town opened in May 1971, as the Nico Malan Theatre. It was renamed to the Artscape in 2001 and belongs to the Western Cape provincial administration. Today, the Artscape Initiative manages the theatre venues and provides essential technical and specialised services on a semi-commercial basis. Artscape is home to a variety of types of Performing Arts in the Western Cape.

The Artscape Complex
The emphasis of Artscape is on sustainable theatre practice, education and development. Artscape has developed into a vibrant, multi-functional creative arts centre, offering exceptional venue facilities and specialist theatrical services. Artscape’s services include a vast array of lighting and sound equipment, production and stage managers, to create fantastic productions of an excellent standard. Artscape prides itself on working in partnership with both local and international players in the arts world and is proud to host a wide variety of theatrical productions, all focused on ensuring the highest standard in entertainment for all visitors.

Artscape also has a décor studio located at a separate warehousing facility of some 12 000 square meters. The manufacturing services team consists of highly experienced set and scenic designers, carpenters, welders, painters and prop makers. The Artscape Theatre is ideally located to serve the Cape’s performing arts, film, tourism, entertainment, conference and exhibition industries. The complex consists of a fully equipped Opera House, able to seat nearly 1500 spectators, a 540-seat and a smaller 140-seat theatre, called the Arena, a piazza, gardens, rehearsal rooms and loads of parking space.
