Situated on the ocean’s edge in De Kelders, near Gaansbaai in the beautiful Cape Overberg, Whale Huys offers incredible views of Walker Bay from every room in the house. The wonderful sea vistas were the first thing that struck us as we entered the property and within minutes of our arrival we were treated to the awesome sight of whales breaching and lob tailing in the ocean, right in front of the house.

We were met on Friday afternoon by the lovely Jenene who gave us the grand tour, explained how everything worked and then left us to explore. The house is large, sleeping 8 guests very comfortably and there are spectacular sea views from each room, which all have private balconies.

Whale Huys offers every convenience one would expect from a luxury holiday home, including underfloor heating, DSTV, free WiFi and a computer corner with a laptop, printer and docking station. The bathrooms are kitted out with plenty of fluffy towels, soap and hand lotion. There is an information booklet on site that provides a wealth of information, not only about the property but also about nearby attractions and restaurants.

We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the views, making use of the telescope in the house to see close ups of the whales enjoying the surf. That evening, we drove into Gansbaai and visited Guiseppe’s Pizzeria for dinner. Falling asleep to the sounds of waves crashing on the rocks below was just what the doctor ordered!

On Saturday, we made breakfast – the kitchen in Whale Huys is well equipped, as is the rest of the house, everything one could need is provided. We then decided to take a stroll on the footpath that runs past the house, all the way to De Kelders Caves, further along the bay. It was a pleasant walk and we saw plenty of wildlife along the way – lizards, birds and dassies.

That afternoon, we sat out on the large deck and made use of the pool before we lit the fire and enjoyed a braai next to the swimming pool.

We had to leave on Sunday and it was with sadness that we said goodbye to Whale Huys and the wonderful views. This property is definitely worth visiting if you’re in the Gansbaai/De Kelders area, we thoroughly recommend it!
