The Oranjezicht City Farm Market at the V&A Waterfront

Published: January 8, 2016 5:35 pm

Food markets are a big deal in Cape Town.

Most people know of The Biscuit Mill Market in Woodstock, or Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay. But surprisingly not many know about this awesome market right next to the V&A Waterfront Shopping Centre. Just head towards the parking lot at Granger Bay every Saturday from 9am – 2pm to get your fill of a huge range of delicious organic food market goodness.

Held every Saturday at the historic Granger Bay site of the V&A Waterfront, the OZCF Market Day is a community farmers-style market for independent local farmers and artisanal food producers. At the OZCF Market customers can do weekly food shopping (veg, fruit, bread, organic dairy, free-range eggs, honey, muesli etc), try out some delicious cooked and raw foods and be inspired about helping to build an alternative food system.  Additionally, customers can buy edible plants and seedlings, compost and gardening supplies and equipment.

Entrance: There is no fee to enter the market. Pedestrian entrances are open directly from Beach Road, and cyclists, joggers, dog walkers and others are most welcome.

Public transport: The MyCiTi 104 route stops opposite the market on Beach Road and at the main V&A Waterfront stop. The T01 also stops there, as well as on Granger Bay Blvd a block from the market.

Parking: 250 surface parking bays are available adjacent to the market. Parking is charged by the V&A Waterfront at R10 for the full day.”

Editorial Review – Blommekloof Country Cottages

Published: November 6, 2015 2:29 pm

Reviewed May 2015

5 months into the year already and I have no idea where it went. Every day seems to run away with me and I never seem to get time just for me, to switch off from the world and just enjoy the moment. Sound familiar?

Then Blommekloof Country Cottages is the perfect place for you. This past weekend, after yet another crazy week, we packed the car and set off in search of the rest we so badly needed. What we found at Blommekloof was so much more than we could have ever hoped for.

Blommekloof Farm is situated in the Leeukloof Valley, near Ruiterbos, in the Outeniqua Mountains between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn.

We arrived late on Thursday evening and were greeted by Claude who showed us everything we needed to know and set us up with loads of candles and paraffin lamps in case of the dreaded load shedding. We immediately lit a fire (with the wood provided) and got the braai on the go, poured a glass of wine and started to relax. Breathing in the fresh country air and hearing the sounds of nature all around you is pure perfection. There are no TV’s and very limited cell phone reception, so you really have no choice but to switch off from the world.

For the first 2 nights we stayed in Arum Cottage, which has an old school, rustic charm to it. The kitchen is equipped with everything you could possibly need to be able to prepare any meal your heart desires – It even has muffin pans! The lounge has a fire place (wood also provided), books and board games, what more could you ask for, a perfect recipe for ultimate relaxation.

On Saturday we moved over to Sunflower cottage, which is a more modern, open plan set up, with high white ceilings and bright colours. It is also designed to be eco friendly, with solar power and a gas stove. Like Arum Cottage it also has a large undercover patio and braai area, an indoor fireplace and a fully equipped kitchen.

The farm itself is child and pet friendly and is home to ducks, geese, chickens, cows, calves, dogs and cats. There is plenty to do, including walking, birding, wildlife, and catch-and-release fishing on three different dams, in case you feel like being a bit more active.

When Sunday morning arrived and it came time to head back to Cape Town, I can honestly say that we were all a lot more relaxed and rested than before we arrived.

We will definitely be back to visit again in the near future and would recommend Blommekloof Country Cottages to anyone and everyone who wants and needs to experience ultimate relaxation, to switch of from the world and just enjoy the moment.
